Vision Therapy is a special, individualized eye-exercise program designed to improve certain visual skills such as eye tracking or eye alignment which can cause problems with any number of visual tasks however symptoms are most predominant in children who are having difficulties with reading and writing. These programs generally require weekly in-office visits with exercises and activities to be done at home to improve the accuracy of eye movements, focussing and the coordination between the two eyes.
Myopia is also known as near-sightedness or the inability of the eye to see far away without assistance from glasses or contact lenses. Due to the increase in up-close work that humans do, mostly on screens, recent studies are estimating that 50% of the world’s population will be near-sighted by the year 2050. Eyes with higher myopic prescriptions are at a higher risk of developing sight-threatening conditions such as retinal detachments, myopic maculopathy, glaucoma and cataracts.
Myopia control is a treatment to slow the progression of myopia, particularly in children who are showing a rapid rate of increase in their myopic prescription. The most effective treatments so far are a special daily contact lens, called MiSight, or a special type of glasses lens that children wear to help prevent the prescription from changing and eye from growing longer (which is part of the cause of increased myopia). These treatments have been shown to slow the increase in the prescription by up to 60% and slow the elongation of the eye by 52%. Other treatments such as eye drops do exist however they are not yet proven to be as effective as the glasses or contact lens options.
Enhanced single vision lenses are a new technology that allows your eyes to relax and focus more comfortably when looking at a near screen such as a smart phone, computer or tablet. These lenses are optimal for individuals between 19-39 who spend a lot of time looking at screens as they reduce the focussing demand on your eyes for up close work and have a blue-light blocking coating on them, which also works to prevent eye fatigue and disruption to your sleep cycle.
